He would settle on the flat stone at the wall’s base, the one warmed earliest by the sun. There he would sit, facing the horizon, a wool blanket draped over his knees. Sometimes he would bring a tin cup of café de olla, sweet with piloncillo and cinnamon. Sometimes he would bring nothing but silence.

People in the village whispered about him.
"He’s waiting for someone," they said.
"He’s talking to ghosts," others nodded.
"Maybe he’s just tired of home."

But only the wind and the birds ever truly heard him.
